I have no patience for wood burning. Help?
Posted by rafiwashere on May 20, 2023 at 7:52 pmDoes anyone have any tips or tricks for wood burning? Any time I try to do it, it ends up looking like I’m five and I tried creating something epic with crayons.

I had the same experience with wood burning. That was my original plan for the dragons egg treasure chest. I ended up painting it instead because I wasn’t able to get the hang of wood burning. I’m also interested in tips!💚 I know I’ll try it again eventually.

I guess the key is to just push through the suck lol

Ugh, totally. Eventually I decided that I was trying to wood burn because I thought it would fit my piece really well. But after tying it a few times, I realized I’m just not that into it. I didn’t put down the wood burning tool and go back to what was comfortable for me either. I had never painted on anything other than canvasir paper, and the wood surface/lack of experience with painting made it a huge challenge for me. The difference was that I enjoyed the painting challenge. Wood burning, not so much, lol

Rafi don’t feel bad! The first few times I tried woodburning it was a hot mess! There are two “tricks” that helped me…First try drawing what you would like to produce in pencil first to “practice”. The second tip is one taken from pencil drawing techniques–create a tonal range from lightest to darkest on a practice piece of wood. You can use this wood to play around with pressure, using different tips for the tool, and trying to recreate textures and patterns. Both of these tips have helped me tremendously, and I still fall back on them when I haven’t wood burned in a while, just to warm up.
